What is a thobe?
The thobe typically refers to a long-sleeved, ankle-length robe worn by men in Qatar and others in the region. Essentially, the thobe is worn in a gleaming white colour, however, during the winter season many opt for darker colours which are made with thicker fabrics. The thobe is made complete with a piece of fabric which is worn on the head, known as ‘ghitra‘, underneath which a small woven cap is worn, known as “gahfiya” and all of it held in place with a black woven ring, called the “igal“.
To further complement the look, the thobe is typically worn with classic traditional style leather slippers or sandals, although, in the modern-day many pair it with sneakers or conventional formal shoes.
Can foreigners wear a thobe?
Non-Qataris or non-Arabs may also wear a thobe, and there is no restriction in doing so.
