Qatar urges all sides to solve Ukrainian crisis through peaceful, diplomatic means

The State of Qatar urged all parties to exercise restraint, avoid further escalation, and adhere to peaceful and diplomatic means to settle disputes and differences between Russia and Ukraine.

The State of Qatar expressed deep concern over the ongoing developments in Ukraine and their humanitarian repercussions, in addition to the dangerous consequences of the accelerating escalation on peace and security.

This came in a statement made by H.E. the State of Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani in front of the emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly on the situation in Ukraine.

The statement said that over the past few days, the world witnessed once again the woes and pain of armed violence, adding that the State of Qatar is following with great concern the current developments in Ukraine and their humanitarian repercussions, in addition to the dangerous consequences of the accelerating escalation on international peace and security, as well as on the economy and food security around the world.

The statement stressed that the State of Qatar’s foreign policy principles are based on adhering to the purposes, principles and provisions of the Charter, including the provisions of Article Two regarding the settlement of International disputes by peaceful means and refraining from the threat of use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. From this standpoint, the State of Qatar affirmed respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The statement said that the State of Qatar is convinced that the way to settle the current crisis and meet the legitimate concerns of all parties is through constructive dialogue in a spirit of compromise based on the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, in addition to implementing existing agreements, reaching comprehensive and sustainable solutions, and ensuring that the legitimate concerns of all parties are met.

At the conclusion of its statement, the State of Qatar called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, international human rights law and international humanitarian law to facilitate rapid, safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to those in need and protect civilians and civilian facilities, as well as medical and humanitarian workers.

It also stressed the need to keep the humanitarian situation of those affect by violence, displaced persons and refugees as a top priority and provide the necessary assistance while adhering to the international principles for providing humanitarian assistance.
