The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022(TM) will be the first to witness the participation of female referees.
Along with the first female referees, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022(TM) will see many firsts such as being the first in the winter season and being played in a close stadium with cooling technology.
The decision to select three female referees and three assistant referees by FIFA as part of the World Cup finals in Qatar indicates the development of women in football and will be historic at the most significant global football event.
Furthermore, participation in the world cup will be a test in front of a global audience which can be used to ensure they are a part of future editions.
As per Italian Pierluigi Collina, head of the FIFA Referees Committee, this momentous change is an outcome of years of effort to have female referees participating in FIFA tournaments, adding that the presence of female referees in the elite matches of the most important men’s competitions will be seen as a matter of course.
It was further added that women’s participation is by right, given that they play their roles consistently and maintain high standards.
It was also added that the FIFA Referees Committee is very confident in its choices, and hopes that all the selected referees will succeed in providing high standards in order to give each team their fair rights, and then the event will emerge in a successful and distinguished
The list of the six selected women referees includes France’s Stephanie Frappart, Rwanda’s Salima Mukasanga, Japan’s Yoshimi, Yamashita (field referee), Brazil’s Noiza Pak, Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina, and American Catherine Nesbitt (assistant referee).
